Dark Horse Comics is holding a contest to re-create a Hellboy comic book cover, and I decided to give it a shot. I thought it would be fun to try a retro look with a little Jack Kirby flavor. Pen and ink with digital color.
I sculpted a tiny portrait head of my pal Johan onto a mini artist’s manikin, and here are the results. A fun little project with infinite possibilities should I decide to practice some Voodoo! Sculpted with Super Sculpey Firm and painted with acrylics.

My landlord owns a landscaping business, and keeps leftover stone from his projects at the end of the driveway. I decided to grab a chunk and experiment with a bas relief sculpture. I think this is slate; it carved easily with a chisel and X-acto knife, and I used sandpaper to smooth the surface a little. The iris and pupil were carved with a Dremel tool.
My name is John Thompson, and I am a professional illustrator currently working in the gaming industry. I decided to start this blog as a way of motivating myself to draw more. My plan is to update often with new work, whether traditional drawing and painting media, digital, or sculpture. Thanks for stopping by!
